What actually makes content rank in 2026

August 2026·7 min read

Word count and keyword density stopped being reliable ranking levers years ago. What consistently moves the needle comes down to three things: matching search intent precisely, demonstrating real topical depth, and giving visitors a page experience that doesn't fight them.

Start with intent, not keywords

Before writing a single line, we categorize the target query by intent — informational, comparison, transactional or navigational. A page trying to serve two intents at once usually serves neither well. If someone searching a term wants a quick definition, a 3,000-word guide with a sales pitch at the top will underperform a tight, direct answer.

Depth beats length

Topical depth means covering the sub-questions a genuinely knowledgeable person would answer, not padding a page to hit a word count target. The strongest content briefs are built from real "people also ask" data and competitor gap analysis, adding length only where it earns its place.

Page experience is still a ranking factor

Slow load times, intrusive interstitials and layout shift all work against otherwise strong content. Technical health and content quality aren't separate workstreams — they need to move together.

What to check on every brief

  • Does the primary heading directly answer the query?
  • Are the sub-questions a searcher would naturally ask all addressed?
  • Is there a clear next step for the reader, not just an ending?
  • Does the page load quickly and render cleanly on mobile?

None of this is exotic. It's just consistently applied, which is rarer than it should be.
